Becoming a Driver

Cassidy Transportation helps our new drivers achieve proper qualification to comply with transportation laws and regulations, as well as, ensure the safety of our passengers.  In order to drive a school vehicle you need to do the following:

>> Obtain a CDL (Commercial Drivers License) endorsed with a P (showing you can transport passengers) and an S (showing you can drive a school bus)

>> Be fingerprinted

>> Pass a full DOT physical exam

>> Pass a written test

>> Pass a road test, which is done with one of our school vans

We walk you through each step until you pass all requirements.  We also train you on one of our vehicles to prepare you for your road test. A licensed driver will accompany you to your test in a Cassidy Transportation vehicle.

Do you currently have a CDL with a PS endorsement?

YES

If you already possess a CDL with a PS endorsement, please complete the Employee Application Form ( Employee Application). For your convenience, you may complete this form electronically and e-mail to  info@cassidytransinc.com or print the form and mail to 14 Rt. 46, Budd Lake, NJ 07828.  We will contact you promptly.

NO

If you don’t possess a CDL, please follow these instructions:

First Complete the Employee Application Form and MorphoTrak Universal Form.

Then to obtain your Permit follow these easy steps;

1.  Complete the Employee Application Form ( Employee Application).  For your convenience, you may complete this form electronically prior to printing.

2.  Pass and complete a DOT physical.  This must be done by a DOT Certified doctor.  Next you will then visit your local NJ Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) office and purchase a CDL permit. The permit costs $125.00, but Cassidy Transportation will reimburse this amount plus physical costs in your first paycheck. This is the only upfront cost associated with your application. All other appointments are paid by Cassidy Transportation prior to their completion. Please ensure that you receive the permit and a driver’s manual. When you arrive at the MVC, please bring your 6-point identification and also indicate that you do not want to take the test at that time (the test will be scheduled later).

3.  After you have purchased your permit, call us at 908.876.5470 or e-mail us at info@cassidytransinc.com to set up an appointment. Please bring the completed Employee Application Form, DOT Certification, permit, and manual to your appointment. We will personally sit down with you and go over the manual and what to study. Once you pass the written test, we will set an appointment for fingerprinting.  We will fill out IdentiGo form that you will need with you when you are being fingerprinted.

Obtaining your school bus license

At this point you have purchased your permit and we can now begin the next step to getting your bus license endorsement.

4.  You will pick a current copy of the CDL manual along with your permit.  Study all sections pertaining to the test you will be taking. Sections 5,6,7,8,&9 do not pertain to Class C.  Do not study these sections.

5.  The written test is administered at any local MVC agency.  You do not have to make an appointment in advance and there is no cost to take the test.

6.  The test is broken in 3 individual tests: basic knowledge, passenger transport, and school bus.  The Basic knowledge section is 50 questions and you are allowed 10 wrong answers. The passenger transport section is 20-25 questions and you are allowed 5 wrong answers.  Lastly, the school bus is 20-25 questions and you are allowed 5 wrong answers.  You may take all three sections at one time or complete each section individually at different times and days.  If you fail any section of the test, you will be permitted to retake that section after a 7 day waiting period.  You can continue retaking the test, if you fail, each week until the permit expires (three months from the date you purchased your permit).

The test is multiple choices and you are permitted to skip questions. As soon as you correctly answer 40 questions, the computer will shut off and provide you with a passing score.  However, if you answer 11 questions incorrectly, the computer will shut off and provide you with a failing score.  Therefore, it is very important to only answer the questions that you are absolutely certain to answer correctly.  If you are unsure of an answer, it is recommended that you skip the question.  At the end of the test, the computer will present you with the questions that you skipped and provide you with an opportunity to answer those questions.

7.  Once you pass all test sections, you will need your DOT physical certification to schedule your road test prior to leaving the MVC. Once you schedule your road test you must call our office so that we can schedule your fingerprinting, medical exam and training for your road test.  Training will take place with our trainer, at our facility, on our bus.  You and the trainer will determine how many sessions you will need.
