Sylvia Cassidy

September 28, 1935 – October 28, 2020

It is with great sadness that we have lost our company’s founder, Sylvia Cassidy in October, 2020. Sylvia dedicated her entire career to the busing industry and was one of the very first women to have a business of this type. She was a true pioneer in the industry and all of us thank her for paving the way for future generations of women and men alike in the industry. We thank her for all her dedication and determination at a time when it was not easy for women to be in business. She will be missed. May she rest in peace.

History

Our story starts in 1970 with Sylvia Cassidy.  While working at a local district bus company, Sylvia witnessed the challenges that special needs children faced in daily transportation.  She worked hard to identify the changes in transportation that would be required to provide a safe and comfortable environment for special needs children.  Simultaneously, programs for children with special needs were becoming increasingly available and helping to fuel Sylvia’s passion to create a transportation company that was optimized for these children.

After saving up enough money to purchase her first school bus, Sylvia decided to follow her dreams and founded Cassidy Transportation, Inc. in 1970.  Cassidy Transportation was quickly awarded its first route and Sylvia drove the route herself. The following year, Sylvia used the profits from the single route to purchase a second van.  Realizing the potential of the business and importance of the service that it provided to the special needs community, Sylvia’s husband, Bill Cassidy, joined her efforts. For the next 27 years Bill and Sylvia built one of the largest bus companies catering to the special needs population.

Today, Cassidy Transportation is owned and operated by their daughter Lori and son-in-law John.  Lori and John have worked tirelessly to expand the business, while remaining just as committed as Sylvia to the safety and well-being of the children that they transport. Cassidy Transportation is now responsible for transportation of over 600 students to over 100 different schools every year. Their top priority is to provide the safe, quality transportation that every child deserves.

Lori, who was only three years old when Cassidy Transportation was founded, has been quoted many times by saying “I grew up in this business and I’m a mom.  First and foremost is the safety of the children we transport and the bus drivers who drive them.”
